Mr. Predicto Talks David Cook and David Archuleta

November 10, 2008

Now that the election is over, America is gripped by an arguably bigger rivalry: David Cook vs. David Archuleta.

Rocker David might have been crowned the American Idol this year, beating out Lil’ David by more than 12 million votes, but does that also mean he’ll have a bigger career too?

Let’s compare them, shall we?

In this corner, David Archuleta. Self-titled album. Release date: Nov. 11.

archuletaPros:

-He’s the kind of pop star–sweet, boyish, non-threatening–who elicits a devoted following made up of both tweens and grannies alike. In fact his fans have dubbed themselves “Arch Angels.”

-His self-titled, “Crush,” debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Cons:

-He comes across as young and naive, especially when taking into account his album’s liner notes, which total 3,500 freakin’ words. Will such an earnest guy be able to survive the big, bad music business and…

-His dad/manager, often rumored to be the stage-dad from hell?

And in this corner, David Cook. Self-titled album. Release date: Nov. 18.

Pros:

-Um, he won American Idol, garrnering 56% of the votes. david_cook

-He’s been very high-profile since his win. Not only has he performed on Saturday Night Live,  he also won ”Best Reality/Variety Star” award at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards and has an endorsement deal with Skechers.

Cons:

-His first single, “Light On,” only debuted at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100.

-His fanbase doesn’t seem to have a catchy nickname, which probably means they aren’t as rabid as Archuleta’s. [UPDATE: A commenter points out that his fans are called "Word Nerds" because Cook loves crossword puzzles. But still, the victor of an epic battle between Archangels and Word Nerds seems obvious, doesn't it?]

Seems to me the Davids are evenly matched. Predicto Mobile users are split as well – 54% predicted that David Cook will sell more albums than David Archuleta in their first week of sales.

Mr. Predicto Talks Beyonce and Barack Obama

November 6, 2008

So, Predicto users were correct in predicting that Barack Obama would be elected President of the United States. Now that the election’s settled, let’s party!

OSCARS ARRIVALSAt least, that’s what Beyonce is thinking. Like many people in this country, she is thrilled and excited that Obama won, and has offered to perform at his Inauguration Day.

“I’m there. I can’t wait,” she said. “Whatever they want — if they need me to volunteer, they need me to sing, I’m there, and I’m ready.”

Can you tell that Ms. Sasha Fierce really, really, hopes to be invited to Obama’s big bash? So do PredictoMobile users: 74% believe that Beyonce will sing at President-Elect Obama’s Inauguration Day on Jan. 2009.

Hey Beyonce, if you really are willing to do anything, how about convincing your husband Jay-Z to show up and perform too? After all, Obama has said he’s a fan, and actually even brushed the “dirt off his shoulder” at a campaign stop earlier this year. Wouldn’t it be more awesome to see Jay-Z performing at the inauguration than his wife?

Well, that’s just my opinion. Visit Predicto.com to see the Predicto Community’s opinions on the latest in current events, pop culture and more!

Mr. Predicto Talks People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive

November 3, 2008

Okay, there’s a big election happening tomorrow. But maybe you want to think about something less stressful. Something that is fun and fluffy and in no way impacts your taxes or retirement savings. Like People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive!

Every year around this time, the magazine’s editors determine who will be crowned the Most Attractive Male Human with a Pulse through careful research and scientific analysis. Past winners include that trifecta of hotness Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damon. And can you believe that Nick Nolte was deemed Sexiest Male Alive in 1992? How the sexy have fallen.

But it’s a new year, and Mr. Predicto thinks two likely candidates for the crown are Christian Bale and, yes, Barack Obama.

Why? Well, Christian Bale starred in the biggest movie of the year and Polish scientists have determined that he is physically the most perfect man on the planet. As for Obama, he’s the biggest news story in the entire world, and when he jogs he sorta looks like Superman saving the day.

What does the Predicto community think? 24% voted that Christian Bale will be voted People Magazine’s 2008 Sexiest Man Alive, 23% voted for Barack Obama, and 53% think it will be someone else (but I bet not Nick Nolte).

Mr. Predicto Talks 2008 Presidential Election

October 31, 2008

Here’s the one thing this country can agree on, red and blue states alike: we are all sick of the presidential election. I personally never want to hear these buzzwords or phrases ever again:

Maverick. Caribou Barbie. Pitbull and lipstick. Hockey mom. Joe the Plumber. Reformer. Bridge to Nowhere. Main Street vs. Wall Street.

Enough, right? Let’s just vote already and be done with it. But can you believe that mere days away from the election, some people are still undecided? What more do these undecideds need to know? Was there a real lack of information on where Barack Obama and John McCain stand on the important issues?

I mean, we’ve only had the primaries, the Republican and Democratic conventions, three presidential and one vice-presidential debates, hundreds of commercials, a 30 minute informercial, SNL parodies, The View “Hot Topic” shoutfests, spin room punditry on network and cable news, not to mention the millions of articles and blog posts written about every single piece of minutiae related to the campaign.

So if you’re undecided three days before the election, maybe just don’t vote okay?

As for the rest of America, those people who have taken the time to make an informed decision on arguably the most significant election in their lifetimes–how are they voting?

Well we’ll find out on November 4th of course. The PredictoMobile community, however, strongly favor one candidate: 77% predicted that Barack Obama will be elected President of the United States.

Mr. Predicto Talks Jackson 5 Reunion

October 29, 2008

“ABC, easy as 1,2,3…”

Would a Jackson 5 reunion really be so easy to put together? Oldest Jackson (and father of Jermajesty) Jermaine thinks so. He announced to an Australian newspaper that the Jackson 5 would be reuniting for a world tour.

Well, lets see. Jermaine’s obviously in. Jackie and Marlon–of course. What else do they have to do? Tito could have been a hold out, since he’s enjoying a revival of his popularity as John McCain’s friend Tito the Builder. In the end, I’m sure he’ll join too because the election’s ending in a matter of days, so his schedule will be clear.

Michael Jackson? He might be the lone holdout. After all, he’s an internationally successful solo artist who has sold gazillions of records and owned his own monkey. What does he need his siblings for? Family loyalty? Pshaw. For the benefit of fans? As if. Because he has nothing else going on? Totally.

Will he actually do it? Well, 67% of PredictoMobile users voted that Michael Jackson will not confirm he is reuniting with the Jackson 5 by 11/15.

Personally I’d only want a Jackson 5 reunion if Michael can go back to looking like the cute kid he used to be forty years ago (see the pic above).

Mr. Predicto Talks Britney Spears’ Halloween Costume

October 27, 2008

Halloween is only a few days away, and Mr. Predicto still doesn’t know what his costume will be yet. The most popular costumes this year are probably going to be Joker from The Dark Knight and of course, Sarah Palin. I’d rather not wear crazy makeup or a beehive, though. What’s a pop culture obsessive to do?

Maybe I should take a cue from Britney Spears. She’s rumored to be dressing up this year as herself–specifically, the crazy, shaved head version of herself from last year (as pictured left). Apparently, Brit’s regained her sense of humor as well as her sanity, and is supposedly having a big Halloween bash where she’ll parody herself.

It would be awesome if Britney wore a bald cap for Halloween, but will she really? 83% of PredictoMobile users voted that Britney Spears would not dress up as “Shaved Head Britney” for Halloween.

Even if she doesn’t, maybe Mr. Predicto will dress up as the high school version of himself by wearing flannel, Doc Martens, and a surly attitude. It could work…

Mr. Predicto Talks High School Musical 3

October 24, 2008

After like six years in high school, the kids from High School Musical are finally graduating, andnd they’re celebrating the momentous occasion by jumping from cable TV to the big screen.

I’m obviously not the target audience for this movie (the Internet barely existed when Mr. Predicto was in high school, if that gives you any indication) but after watching the trailer for HSM 3, the movie seems watchable enough, with its synchronized dancing in school hallways, car junkyards, basketball games and of course, senior prom.

But will moviegoers flock to see it on opening weekend? The Predicto Mobile community sure thinks so. 74% believe that High School Musical 3 will earn more than $60 million in its box office debut. Time will tell if Zac Efron’s Footloose remake will make as much money. (Yes, that is actually happening. Think Kevin Bacon will be first in line?)

Mr. Predicto Talks Jennifer Aniston Pregnancy Rumors

October 22, 2008

Okay, so Jen Aniston’s rep has already denied the rumors with a press release that’s equivalent to someone rolling their eyes. But PR flacks are not always the most forthcoming about what’s really going on in their clients’ lives. Our friend Madonna had her rep denying the divorce rumors earlier this summer, and we all know what happened there.

So let’s speculate about the Maniston (Animay? JenniJohn?) pregnancy. Could this be the reason these two seem to have reconciled after splitting up a few months ago? After all, Jen was pretty peeved that John talked to TMZ about the breakup. Here’s a more cynical theory: she is plain sick and tired of Angelina Jolie.

Angie’s been in the media a lot recently promoting a new movie. This has meant releasing adorable Brad-snapped pictures of her cavorting with her kids, not to mention the “stunning” admission that she and Brad fell in love while filming Mr. and Mrs. Smith, despite the fact that he was still married to Jen at the time. This led to the blogosphere erupting into a war between Team Aniston and Team Jolie. (The basic arguments? Jen is boring and Angelina’s a homewrecker.)

Anyway, perhaps Jennifer was tired of all the attention her ex-husband and his family was getting, and decided to change the narrative of “Poor single desparate Jen” that the tabloids love so much. Now she’s “Shiny happy preggers Jen!”

A lot of PredictoMobile users think the same thing–54% are voting that Jennifer Aniston will announce she is pregnant with John Mayer’s child before 12/20.

Mr. Predicto Talks 2008 World Series

October 20, 2008

Mr. Predicto has a confesssion: he really didn’t want the Red Sox to go to the World Series. It’s nothing personal. I’d just rather see two teams like the Tampa Bay Rays and the Philadelphia Phillies get a turn at the top prize. Because let’s face it: once the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years and finally escaped The Curse of the Bambino, who cares about them anymore?

Now the Phillies versus Rays seem like a very interesting matchup since both won their respective divisions. Here’s some eye-raising info you might know about them:

The Rays didn’t even exist until 10 years ago.  But here’s the crazy thing. They had the worst record in the league in the 2007-2008 season, so they were 200-to-1 longshots to even reach the World Series this season!

The Phillies have been around a lot longer than the Rays, which has given them an unfortunate record: they’ve lost the most games of any team in MLB history. No, really. Talk about a major chip on your shoulder. At least they’ve won a championship before…all the way back in 1980. Not quite as legendary as the Red Sox’s losing streak, but still pretty sucktastic.

So who’s going to win? I’d bet on the Rays, but 54% of PredictoMobile users think the Phillies will win the World Series.
